BLS uses the Systems Approach to Training and will carry out an initial, then continuous, needs analysis for all clients.


As well as supporting The Defence School of Languages, our instructors have assisted a considerable number of Defence Ministries in providing Military English courses and advice, in country.

All of our tutors are highly experienced and have extensive sector specific knowledge. Many have served in either the Royal Navy, British Army or Royal Air Force.

Students who opt for assessment are assessed through the NATO STANAG system or IELTS



A STANAG, or STANdardisation AGreement, is an international military standard created by the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) for regulating equipment, procedures, tactics, training and everything else that affects how armed forces from different countries work together on operations and exercises. 



BLS is the sole external agency for the UK Ministry of Defence's School of Languages for English language instruction.

 


 

STANAG 6001 is a language proficiency scale designed to allow comparisons of language ability in different countries. The scale consists of a set of descriptors with proficiency skills broken down into six levels, coded 0 through 5. They are defined as follows:


0 - No proficiency

1 - Survival

2 - Functional

3 - Professional

4 - Expert

5 - Highly articulate native


Language proficiency is recorded with a profile of 4 digits indicating the specific skills in the following order: Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing
